Gilbert Wayne Mervis

Gilbert Wayne Mervis passed on Friday, September 6, 2024 surrounded by loving family members. He is survived by his wife, Penny; his children, Gayle (James) and Peter (Lisa); his grandchildren Rachel (Troy), Sarah (Conley), Emily, Aidan, and Ariana; and his great grandchildren Lucas, Alexis, Cailum, Anthony, Landon, Spencer, Cadence, Jonathan, and Leila.

Gilbert Wayne was born September 11, 1946. He married Penny in 1968; they had recently celebrated their 56th year anniversary. He was a graduate of Walled Lake High School and Eastern Michigan University. Through a multi-faceted and successful career in electrical contracting, Gilbert and his family lived in many places, but spent the majority of his final years in the greater-Lansing area.

Gilbert Wayne enjoyed classic cars, fishing, and spending time with his family. Gil was often found to be completing some home or yard renovation project, initiated by either his wife, his daughter, or one of his granddaughters. He was actively involved in the Buick Town Buick Club of Flint, showing his 1954 Buick Riviera and his 1972 Buick LeSabre Convertible. He traveled to many classic car shows, the family favorite being the annual Motor Muster at Greenfield Village. Gil and his son, Peter, made many treks to Canada for annual fishing trips. In his later years, being surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren brought many smiles and laughs for everyone.

Gilbert Wayne was a kind, generous, and helpful man. Gil was genial and welcoming, offering genuine friendship to everyone. Underneath his quiet, unassuming demeanor bubbled a joyful jokester, which sometimes caused his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to double check what he just said. Hearing Gil’s gentle chuckle and seeing his bright smile brought joy to all those around him.
