He was born in Riley Township, MI, the second born of seven boys.
He was known for his story telling and loved to inquire about the stories of others’ family origins and occupations. He grew up on a farm working its fields and at the age of 17 grew restless driving his “little Ford tractor” and formulated a plan to pursue academics. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University. He joined Army ROTC and after graduating from college was sent to Germany where he was a First Lieutenant with the Army- serving as an Ammunition Operation Officer. He returned from Germany and met his wife of 63 years, Beverly. He worked for the USDA for 43 years and retired as the Director of the State of Michigan office. His work in the government lead to what he recalled as “five moves with six children.” He received a Distinguished Service Award in 1996 for his contribution to agricultural statistics from MSU. He lived a life full of work and was at his best during a project. He valued his education, family and Catholicism above all others.
Survived by his six children.
