Magnhild (Dølhaug) Faland was born in December 1924 in Alvdal, Norway. She graduated as a registered nurse from Aker University Hospital, Oslo, Norway in 1946. After graduation she worked at Akers Hospital for 4 years after which she joined the Norwegian Army as a Lieutenant Nurse, serving 6 months in Germany in the “Norwegian Tyskland Brigade (1947-53)” and soon thereafter another 6 months in the Norwegian Air Force to where she spent a few months at the air base in Gardemoen, Norway. Shortly after she transferred to the northern city of Bardufoss, Norway as the camps head nurse, and served there for one year. In 1952 she transferred to the Norwegian Nurses exchange program and came to Chicago, IL to work two years at the Norwegian American Hospital. Soon after she worked a few years as a pediatric nurse with a few doctors and area hospitals in the Chicago area. After her marriage, she took a few years off raising a family and started again at Belmont Hospital in the Surgical Services Ward. Thereafter she was hired at Reed Medical Center (Dunning Mental Health Facility) as Supervisor of Central Medical Supplies, where she worked until retirement. While at Reed Medical Center, Governor Walker awarded her the Illinois Governors Medal for her Organization and Incentive Savings as an employee of the State of Illinois in the Central Supply Department.
Magnhild was very involved in her Church, “The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church – Minnekirken” as well as with other Norwegian American Organizations in the Chicago area including Nordmanns Forbundet, having served as the Organizations Vice President for a many years.
Shortly after becoming involved in the Minnekirken Norwegian Memorial Church, she met and married her husband Edvin Faland in 1954. They have been married for 62+ years.
While at Minnekirken she along with some of her fellow church ladies organized a group called Julejentene (Christmas Girls. So named by the Church Congregations’ President at the time they formed); Over the years the group of Julejentene have been very instrumental in helping to raise funds for the Church as well as in providing fellowship, fun and laughter to each other and scores of others in the Minnekirken Church congregation. Her beliefs were strong in maintaining the Christian workings of the Church but also as the gathering and social location for those interested to cultivate their Norwegian Heritage, and she continually strived to welcome new comers and visitors and make them feel welcome
She loved to travel and loved her family and friends and her country of birth, Norway, as well as her chosen Home in USA. And became a US Citizen.
In travelling, she visited all 50 states, made various trips to Norway to visit family and friends. She travelled to many destinations in Europe, Mexico and the States with her family and grandkids. She also had the unique chance of travelling to China with Pastor Ronning, to where he had lived with his missionary parents deep into China shortly after China allowed foreign visitors.
An Active social life with friends, family, and travel was the way she lived her life. Her husband, Sons and their families will miss her Dearly. She will forever be in our Hearts and Thoughts.
