Visitation and a memorial service will be at Oehler Funeral Home on Monday, December 23, 2019. The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 noon and the memorial service will follow. Hazel will be buried at Ridgewood Cemetary following the service.
Hazel was the 7th child born in a family of 14 children. She moved to Chicago as a young woman, and began working as a secretary/bookkeeper. As time went on, she became an office manager for various companies. Some years after arriving in Chicago, she met a dashing young man at a dance. They got married in 1955, and began their family. Hazel loved playing cards--especially bridge, and gin rummy. She also loved baking her famous chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies, as well as an assortment of pies. Hospitality was a gift—everyone was welcome in their home. Hazel and Pete were also very active in the Normennenes Singing Society. Ever the planner, Hazel chaired the Entertainment Committee, and took on the duties of Treasurer over the many years they were involved with the club.
Hazel and Pete were baptized at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Glenview, in a reaffirmation of faith. Their faith grew together, and they made many special friends there. In April of 2018, they moved to Melrose Meadows Retirement Community in Iowa City. The residents have become friends, and Hazel enjoyed many fun activities together with them. Hazel and Pete became members of Parkview Evangelical Free Church. That church felt like home immediately, and they are grateful for the many friends they made there.
Hazel is survived by her husband of 64 years, Clarence (Pete) Peterson. They had one daughter, Barbara (Bob Musson), and two grandsons: Ryan (Ashley, and great grandson Cole) and Philip (Elizabeth Smith.) She is preceded in death by their infant son, Carl, her parents Edward and Mildred Marsch, and several sisters and brothers.
