Barbara A Schmitz

Barbara Ann Schmitz, a remarkable woman of grace and compassion whose elegant spirit and discerning eye captivated all who knew her, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 14, 2024, at the age of 84.

Born in Brookings, South Dakota on October 29, 1940, she spent her later years in her beautiful home in Wilmette, Illinois.

Barbara began her career as a registered nurse in Chicago, Illinois, a profession that reflected her caring nature. She was a woman of many interests, finding joy in gardening, growing orchids, collecting unique treasures, and traveling to exotic destinations such as Peru, Thailand, and Turkey.

Her love for the arts and her elegant style made her a true fashion icon.

Barbara found love and companionship throughout her life. Her beloved pet cats were her constant companions, and she formed deep bonds with her family and friends. She was a generous soul, donating to multiple charities and causes that supported the disadvantaged and the hungry.

Barbara is survived by her siblings, Judith Shields, Michael Schmitz, and Patrick Schmitz; her nieces Traci Colwell (and her daughters Lilli and Carine), Valerie Shields, Katie Shields, and Amy (Alan) Simoneli (and their children Nicholas and Noelle); her nephew Michael Bettisworth; and her cherished Cruz family: Antonella, Michael, Florenzo, and Melina.

A celebration of her life will be held privately in Chicago and in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Her burial will be with her parents.
