Born on March 26, 1931, in Latrobe, Pa., to William and Virginia Fetner, Bill graduated from Redford High School in Detroit, Mich., and received a degree in economics from Albion College in Albion, Mich. He was a member of the 1947-50 men’s cross country teams that won four consecutive MIAA championships, and in 1996, team members were inducted into the Albion Athletics Hall of Fame. Bill was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1956.
Bill married Elizabeth “Liz” Beall of DeQuincy in 1959. They lived in Flint, Mich., where Bill worked for General Motors as an auditor. In 1965 the Fetner family moved to DeQuincy.
Bill was a successful businessman and owned DeQuincy Insurance Agency for 18 years. For many years he served the city of DeQuincy as city planner. He was a member of many civic and professional organizations including Rotary International and the DeQuincy Chamber of Commerce. Bill served on the Calcasieu Parish Library Board for over 40 years as both a member and officer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Liz; daughter, Anne Fetner Cobb, and husband, Roger, of Sulphur; son, William “Billy” Fetner, of Graham, Wash.; granddaughter, Jessica Cobb Choate, and husband, Justin, of Sulphur; great grandchildren, Dalton and Rio, of Sulphur; and brother, Scott, and sister-in-law, JoAnn Fetner, of Jupiter, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Walter, Graham and Milton.
His service will be at 11 am, Monday, December 15, 2014 at First Baptist Church of DeQuincy. Visitation will be Sunday, December 14, 2014 from 2pm to 6 pm at Snider Funeral Home, 205 West Harrison St. in DeQuincy, and resume one hour prior to service at the church.
