Ferne Anita VanWinkle

DEQUINCY – Ferne Anita Ross VanWinkle, 72 , passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 in a local hospital.

A native of Mexia, Texas, formerly of Orange, Ferne had lived in DeQuincy the last 38 ½ years. She served her country in the Air Force. Ferne retired from the US Postal service where she worked a number of years as a postal carrier. She enjoyed the outdoors tending her flowers, feeding the birds and squirrels but she always found a little time for woodworking.

Ferne is survived by her husband Jerry L. “Shanks” VanWinkle; son Charles Lee VanWinkle and wife Lori and the “apple of her eye”, granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth VanWinkle; all of DeQuincy, sister Virginia Lewis and brother George Ross, both of Deweyville.

She is preceded in death by her daughter Christie Lynn VanWinkle; parents Walter and Florence Ross; sisters Freda Dunn and Sarah Nutt.

Her funeral will be at 2:00 pm, Monday, August 23, 2010 in the chapel of Hixson Snider Funeral Home. Rev. Wayne Cardwell and Rev. Paul Nugent will officiate. Burial will be in Hyatt Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday from 4 until 9 pm and from 9 am on Monday.
