William J. Nye (Bill) passed away peacefully at the age of 93, two days shy of his 94 birthday on Saturday, April 5, 2025 in Littleton, Colorado at the Gardens of Columbine Assisted Living. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth A. Nye. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Davis, and brothers Charles and Frederick Nye. He is survived by 6 children, Leslie O'Donnell (Michael), Littleton, CO., Julie Tiedeken (Robert), Cheyenne, WY., Laura Gunden (Phil), Castle Rock, CO., Mary Jo Lagesse (David), Littleton, Carla Sweeney (Gary), Phoenix, AZ., and William J. Nye Jr., Edwardsburg, MI. He also is survived by 15 grandchildren, their spouses, and 8 great grandchildren.
Bill was born on April 7, 1931 in Elkhart, Indiana, He graduated from Elkhart High School and attended University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies as well as law school, graduating cum laude in 1954. He began his career in Elkhart, IN as a deputy prosecutor and at at age 29, Bill became the Elkhart City Court Judge. Subsequently, he opened his own law firm and continued to practice law for over 50 years.
Bill had many interests throughout his life; including, in his younger years, playing handball, boating, and waterskiing. His real love, though was snow skiing which he found at the age of 35 and continued yearly until he was 90. He also loved a great game of golf, as well as hiking the mountains of Colorado. He was an avid traveler throughout his life visiting all 50 states as well as many international destinations. He also continued a lifelong love of reading and crossword puzzles.
Bill relocated to Colorado in 2007 upon retiring and the passing of his wife, Elizabeth, to be near children and grandchildren.
There will be a private family service on April 17, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Denver Rescue Mission or UNICEF
