Mary McCall White, 91, of Aurora, passed away Monday, December 30, 2013. She was born April 3, 1922, in Salina, Kansas, the daughter of Clyde and Irene (Swift) McCall. In 1936, she moved with her family from Wichita, Kansas to Denver. She moved to Naples, Florida in 1991 before returning to Denver in 2010. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, John W. McCall, and her granddaughter, Tanya Mitchell.
Mary is survived by children, Teresa (Dennis) Mitchell of Aurora, Colorado, Timothy (Mary) McCall of Abilene, Texas, and Thomas White of Greensboro, North Carolina. She is further survived by her granddaughters, Danelle (Jeremy) Carrel of Aurora and Kira McCall of San Luis Obispo, California, and her great-grandsons Jonathan and Dylan Carrel of Aurora.
Mary graduated from Cathedral High School class of 1940. She was active in sports from childhood until very recently. She was encouraged by her father, and with a natural ability and desire, she was active in Golf, Tennis, Softball, Table Tennis and Bowling. She played in amateur golf tournaments from 1950 to 1991 in Colorado and elsewhere. She was a member of Park Hill Country Club, Denver, and JFK Golf Club, Aurora. Mary continued to enjoy golfing into her 80’s in Naples, Florida. Mary began tennis at age 6 when she won a racquet in a raffle. She competed in amateur tournaments in Denver and placed 2nd at the Pensacola Country Club singles tournament in 1956 when her husband, Donald White, was stationed at Eglin AFB, Florida. In Table Tennis, she was the Colorado mixed doubles champion in 1952, and placed 3rd in the Detroit National tournament in 1953.
Mary bought her first ball mit with babysitting funds. She played catcher, and as a member of the team which placed 3rd in the World Championships, Toronto, in 1952. She played for teams of Women’s Softball League of Colorado from 1937-1952. She was a member of the Denver City Bowling League for many years, on a team that won 3rd in Colorado tournament in Ft. Collins.
