Lisa Mary (Stevens) Colbert peacefully passed away July 4, 2023 at 3:16 pm, after a 3 ½ -year battle with brain cancer. Like always, she “fought the good fight,” but we knew from the beginning that even with all her beauty, her wisdom, her charm, her tenacity, her strength, her courage, and even her stubbornness, there was no beating this foe.
In January of this year, Lisa chose to follow Colorado’s “Access to Medical Aid in Dying” act, to face her imminent death with dignity. The Act allows a terminally ill person - with a prognosis of six months or fewer to live - to request and receive a prescription medication from their physician to end their life in a peaceful, humane, and dignified manner voluntarily and legally. In doing so, Lisa was not “choosing” to die – brain cancer was already taking her life. Instead, she chose to take control of her situation and to not prolong an extremely difficult and painful dying process, and, for that, I will be forever grateful. Sleep well, sweetheart. I love you more than yesterday, and less than tomorrow.
