John was born on July 4, 1934 in New York City, to Hugh Stanley and Hilda Myra Urquhart. He had an older brother, Hugh, and younger Sister Grace. They first lived in Queens, and then moved to Brooklyn, where John attended a vocational high school, and honed his already impressive mechanical skills.
He was married to Ellen Osborne for twenty-five years, and they raised three children, Grace, Susan (married to Mark) and John Stanley. In 1982, he met the love of his life, Dona Auffert, she and her two boys, Derek (married to Merelyn) and John (married to Amy) joined the family in 1985. He was over the moon excited to become a Grandfather to Carman Rose (age 22) and John Derek (age 7).
John began his working life as a mechanic’s apprentice for Otis Elevator around age 15; he moved his way up and became a very well respected elevator adjuster with over 20+ years with the company. He then moved to the Denver area, where he started a franchise of Barbizon School of Modeling, which he owned from 1971 to 2008. While running the Modeling business, he expanded into the rental real estate market, investing, often with his sister Grace, as funds and timing were right. After selling the modeling school, he loved working on all the rental properties. He did so, mostly himself or with his dear friend Steve, until finally letting others start to do the work for him at age 85.
Here at Faith Church, he and Dona met at a Christian Singles Group. Over the last 40+ years, their love for each other and the Lord grew, surrounded by many of the same friends that were there at the beginning.
He was a 35+-year season ticket holder and fan of the Denver Broncos. After he sold the modeling business and “semi-retired”, he and Dona traveled extensively around the world, to nearly every place their hearts desired.
A lifelong Republican, he thoroughly enjoyed following conservative politics, and always-on-his-head his “Make America Great Again” hat sparked many conversations.
In addition to family listed above, his niece Durene( Hugh's daughter), nephew Robert (Grace's son), and a list of dear long-term friends who are too many to name here survive him.
