Dr. John Thomas Kimball Jr. was born January 30, 1934 in Jackson Mississippi to Louise Day and John Thomas Kimball, Sr. He passed away peacefully at St Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado on November 2nd 2023. He leaves behind his wife Mary Kimball, his children Tom (Nancy) Kimball, Ford (Anna) Kimball, Allyson (Chris) Johnson, Kathy (Ken) Peterson, and Kevin (Annie) Schmidt, along with grandchildren David Kimball, Aradia Kimball, Dax and Miles Johnson, Carly (Greg) Gassen, Kevin Peterson, and Sebastian Schmidt. He is also survived by his sister Mary Sue Weber, brother in law Terry Parker, and his former wife and mother of his children, Nora Kimball. He was preceded in death by his sister Beth Anne Parker.
John grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, followed by a move to Phoenix, Arizona in his teen years. His prestigious career in medicine was influenced early as he spent considerable time in hospitals as a young boy with kidney disease. As a teenager, his passions were baseball and cars which would continue to be joys all his life. He graduated from the University of Arizona then went on to the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he was a member of The Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. His residency and fellowship (Cardiovascular Disease) took place at the Cornell Medical Center in New York. He was a collaborator in a groundbreaking study for the treatment of myocardial infarction and the introduction of coronary care units which changed the treatments for patients with that cardiovascular condition. John returned to Denver in 1970 where he was one of the founders of South Denver Cardiology Associates and he served as president for many years. He was in practice for almost 50 years and one of his most comfortable settings in life was at the hospital and office, treating his patients.
His passion for cars continued to grow, ultimately seeing him restore vintage Italian race cars and then racing them in competitions. During his heyday he spent many weekends at racetracks around the State and country racing those lovingly restored vintage automobiles. Along with racing, he had many hobbies that he passed along to his children, from his love of skiing, fishing, pheasant hunting, golf, tennis, gardening and jazz music!
John touched the lives of many and saved the lives of many more. We’re immensely grateful for all the wonderful lessons and memories he bestowed to us over his extraordinary life.
In John’s memory, donations can be made to The National Kidney Foundation https://www.kidney.org/ or the South Denver Heart Center Foundation (https://southdenver.com/south-denver-heart-center-foundation/).
