Joan was born in Washington DC in 1918 during the Great Influenza. When her mother became ill with the influenza shortly after her birth, Joan was sent home to Colorado on the train with a governess to protect her from the outbreak.
Joan grew up in Colorado, and graduated from Vassar College in 1939. She married Jack Pechman in 1941. She is survived by her brother Lawrence Phipps III, sister Diana, two daughters; Judene Hendricks and Josanne Kurkinen, four grandchildren; Danielle Hendricks, Chandra Hendricks, Mariann Lindroos and Lars Kurkinen, and four great grandchildren; Troy Kurkinen, Soraya Lindroos, Troy Lindroos and Amanda Kurkinen.
Joan was very interested in art and in her middle years became a professional artist. She used many mediums, including oil, watercolor and colored pencil, but most of her work was done in batik painting. She showed her work in many galleries in Colorado for over 30 years.
Joan was a volunteer and benefactor to many charities including Planned Parenthood, Frequent Flyers Productions, Food Bank of the Rockies, Volunteers of America, Denver Rescue Mission, Legal Aid Society, Arthritis Foundation, Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum or Nature and Science, Denver Zoo, Doctors Without Borders, and the Susan B Komen Foundation, among others.
She was always interested in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and looked forward to the their visits. She was a great friend to many and always enjoyed a good party. She will be missed by all!
