Corinne L. Washington was born December 20, 1921 in Denver, Colorado, the first child of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Chas Hodge. Her father died April 6, 1927. She lived with her mother Cora B. Hodge and sister, Imogene. Later, Cora married William Coleman, Sr. and of this union bore a son, William Coleman, Jr., in Cow Town (now known as Cherry Creek Shopping Center).
Corinne accepted Christ at a young age. She attended Shorters Methodist Church (AME) where she became a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed teaching about the Lord. She attended Bromwell Elementary School, Gove Junior High School and graduated from East High School. She furthered her education with graduating rom Parks Business College and became a stenographer and worked at the University of Colorado Medical Center.
Corinne united in marriage to Orville A. Copeland on the twenty third day of August in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty One. Four children were born of this union, two girls and two boys; Lucretia A. Copeland, Beatrice Ian Copeland, Orville A. Copeland, Jr. and Carl A. Copeland.
Corinne always had the gift of service and she loved people. She had an ear for music which brought her to the love the piano and sing. She loved to read and write. With such angelic penmanship, opening a card from Corinne made you feel like it was the greatest autograph you had ever received. She was always a beautiful speller and reader. To may, she might as well have been the "Human Dictionary." She was a volunteer for the American Veterans Association. She assisted sending greeting cards to remember birthdays for a number of years to our American veterans. She had a phone prayer line and would send out encouraging messages and daily prayers to young people and family, for years.
She was supportive of her grandchildren. Something admirable yet intimidating was her honest and direct presentation. She always instilled the importance of your appearance. She always told the girls, "Cover you chest, keep your legs closed," and to the boys, "Keep those pants at your waist and always wear a hat."
She was always there with Love and Care!
Throughout our lives, every need, concern,
and problem she would share.
Corinne is survived by her children, Lucretia, Beatrice, and Orville, Jr.; 13 grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. As well as a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at 2:00pm at Olinger Hampden Mortuary in Denver.
