William Paul Metzger was born December 12, 1921 in Arvada, Colorado, the third of six children to Oba E. Metzger and Ruth May Hohenadel. Bill served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He married Martha Jean Gressett September 8, 1950. They were married for 24 years and had three children, Bill, Nancy and Ann. Martha passed away in 1974. He married Deegy Ann Creel (Hope) February 14, 1978. Deegy had two daughters from a previous marriage, Sherri and Cinthia.
Bill graduated from the University of Denver. He worked for the Martin Company for several years. The he worked for Denver City and County at the Department of (then) Welfare until he was forced to retire in 1981 after partially successful quadruple heart by-pass surgery. His heart condition continued over the years and in the last five years restricted his physical activities.
Bill loved to fish, he played golf with many of his friends and his grandsons. Bill and Deegy were members of the Do-Si-Do’s Square Dance Club for 3 or 4 years when ill health for both of them caused them reluctantly to resign.
Church life was a big part of Bill’s life. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church from about 1948. He sang in the chancel choir for more than 50 years years, when worsening health caused him to resign. He was Assistant Treasurer for the Church’s Special Accounts for approximately 60 years. He was a “permanent fixture” in the Church office over the years, rarely ever missing a Sunday.
In October, 1998, Bill and Deegy adopted a one-year old Bichon Frise that they named Baby. She has been their darling for the last 12 years. We both miss Bill very much.
