After a brief illness, Bernice passed peacefully into paradise on August 2, 2016. She was 93. Preceded in death by her husband, L. Paul Weadick, and her parents, Richard & Mabel Fraser, and her younger sister Jeannette, she is survived by her eight children: Louis Paul Weadick, Jr. (Cathy Ciacio); Mary Kay Ackley; Larry Weadick (Robbie); Steve Weadick (Kary); Patrick Weadick; Michael Weadick; Joanne Thomas (Gary); Colleen Weadick; 11 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren.
Bernice was a Colorado native and nearly lifelong resident. She was a child of deaf parents. In 1941, she graduated from Denver’s South High School. She supported the war effort during WWII as a Clerk and a motor pool driver at Lowry Air Force Base. Bernice married L. Paul Weadick on May 7, 1946, and they were happily married until his death in October of 1986. She worked as a medical assistant in an eye doctor’s office; served as a librarian at St. Francis de Sales Grade School; and worked as a professional sign language interpreter - all while raising her eight children. She was a founding member of the Charles B. Avery Memorial Fund and later co-founded the Center on Deafness. In 1980, she received the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award for her unique contributions to the deaf community.
Bernice was a devout Catholic with a devotion to the rosary. Her passion was her family. She collected angel ornaments, loved doing crossword puzzles, riding her stationary bicycle, spent hours playing her favorite games on an iPad, enjoyed travel, theater, golfing, and a wide group of friends. She was kind to everyone she met. Bernice rarely complained about anything; she had a delightful temperament, with an easygoing, positive attitude. She was vibrant, young at heart, flexible, and open-minded. She was a great communicator - listening carefully and responding in a thoughtful, non-judgmental way. She was both our friend and confidant.
Blessed with a warm heart, ready smile, and a generous spirit, Bernice nurtured her family, helped anyone in need, and found joy in all things. She often said, “I am the luckiest person in the world.” The reality is that we who knew her and shared special moments with her are the luckiest people in the world. We will forever be indebted to her for all of the ways she loved us.
