Dr. Brown was born Thursday, January 24, 1924, the son of Joseph Preston Brown and Ethel Marie Dobbs in Wilburton, Oklahoma. He was one of six children. When, at the age of seven, on his birthday, his family moved from Oklahoma to Texas and Denison was the first place they stopped and stayed the night, little did he know then how Denison would impact his life. He was raised on a farm in Bangs, Texas. He attended Hardin Simmons University where he also taught Biology as an undergraduate and where he met the love of his life Nalda Lowry. He went on to Baylor Medical School, doing his residency at Austin State Hospital. After graduation he opened a private practice in Brownwood, Texas for a short while before moving to Denison, opening an office in Downtown Denison and working with Madonna Hospital.
He was passionate about the practice of medicine and was involved from the beginning of the new Memorial Hospital (later Texoma Medical Center), serving on the board for 27 years, as well as at various times, Chief of Staff, Chief of Surgery, and Chief of Medicine. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Denison Yellow Jackets and served as team physician for 40+ years. Dr. Brown also served with the Chamber of Commerce, and on the Denison City Council.
Dr. Brown enjoyed public speaking and was able to give a speech on a moment’s notice with little preparation, often delivering sermons at various churches in Denison.
He loved his family, was a devoted father to his children and was delighted when the grandchildren came along. He was an avid gardener, loving flowering plants and growing vegetables.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nalda, his parents, three sisters, 2 brothers and his son Steve.
He is survived by his son Brian of Houston, daughter Cissy also of Houston, son Alan and his wife Mary of Denison, and daughter in law Lucy of Plano as well as his grandchildren: Chris Brown and wife Tressi of Denison, Lindsay Willeford and husband Craig of Sherman, Nash Brown of McKinney, Alexander Ryan Brown of Plano, Caitlyn Brown of Plano as well as three great grandchildren.
The family would like to give special thanks to the team at Stone Brook Assisted Living and Guardian Hospice for the special attention and care given.
Family visitation will be 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Bratcher Funeral Home.
A private family graveside will be held Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texoma Medical Center.
