Dr. Rice received his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University, followed by his masters and doctorate degrees from East Texas State University in Commerce. He was a teacher and principal in the Sherman school district, serving as the first principal at Perrin Elementary. He then taught psychology at Grayson College when it opened in 1965, also serving during his tenure as the Director of Liberal Arts and Student Services. He retired from Grayson College in 1991. He and his wife, Janet, have 75 years of combined teaching between them.
Don and Janet were members of Waples Methodist Church in Denison for many years, and became members of First Methodist Church in Sherman when they moved to Sherman several years ago.
Don and Janet were married for sixty years. He is survived by his wife Janet of Sherman, son Bill Rice and wife Dana from Garland, daughter Jan LaGrone and husband Larry from Gordonville, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family is setting up a scholarship fund in his name at Grayson College.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 29 at Bratcher Funeral Home in Denison, Texas from 6-7pm. A private family service will be held Wednesday.
