Gary “Doc” Layne Holliday, 66, died Thursday, April 30, 2015 at his home in Denison, TX. He was born October 30, 1948 in Fort Worth to the late Wilburn and Felma Holliday. He graduated in 1966 from Denison High School and attended Grayson County College. He was always talking about many of his fond memories of his time in school. Married Martha Bentley in October 18, 1975. A member of Southside Baptist where he had met and enjoyed many new friends, He was retired from sales.
Many knew him as “Doc”, also known to be quick witted and loved to joke, but always thinking of others.
His cousin Terri wrote he was “quite the jokester, cut up and sarcastic champion with a humble spirit and soft heart.” His wife Martha will always remember the last words out the door anytime we left home, “Did you remember your earrings?”
Gary was an avid sports fan, with golf being his game of choice. He spent many happy hours playing with his golf buddies and dear friends at the Rod and Gun Club. He was President of the Denison Yellow Jacket Booster Club from 1982-1983 and was instrumental in the building of the work out facility at the school. He always enjoyed working hard to support his Jacket team and developed many wonderful friends. He happily waded through cold early morning water to go duck hunting with his friends.
Gary was also the self-appointed driver for any road trips taken by family and friends. He loved to travel and especially vacations to Martha Vineyard to visit family and dear friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Father-in-law W.A. Bentley and nephew Joey Bentley.
Survived by loving wife Martha, Brother Paul and wife Rhonda of Denton, Mother-in-law Leslie Bentley, Brother-in-law W.A. Martha will especially miss the “valet” service to and from work every day since his retirement, and the countless hours of talking about her day at work, he knew my coworkers because he heard about them every day and how important they are to her.
We take comfort in knowing that he is walking pain free and talking and rejoicing with his many family members in Heaven and we will see him again. He never met a stranger and will be dearly missed by his family.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 10am Tuesday at Southside Baptist Church in Denison with Keith Taylor, Jerry Hogan and Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Family visitation will be from 6-7:30 Monday at Bratcher Funeral Home.
