Rabbi Nissen William (Bill) Schwartz of Delray Beach, Florida passed away on July 21, 2021. He was born on December 31, 1925 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Schwartz is survived by his wife Elaine; his children Marty, Debbie, and Danny; and his grandchildren, Gary and Ryan.
Bill is honored with the title of Rabbi Emeritus from Temple Beth El in Pensacola, Florida. He also served at congregation Beth Israel in Meridian, Mississippi; Temple Sinai in Sarasota, Florida: Temple Beth Or in Philadelphia; and Temple Israel in Lafayette, Indiana. He was a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He served as a Chaplain at the Saufley Federal Prison, Eglin Air Force Base, and the U.S. Navy. In 1982, he gave the opening prayer at the U.S. House of Representatives and received a certificate of recognition and appreciation from Speaker of the House, Tip O’Neill, and Florida U.S. Representative, Earl Hutto.
In World War II, he served as a Sergeant and Platoon Leader in the U.S. Army in England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Japan. He received two combat stars as well as other medals for meritorious service. He was awarded the Legion of Honor medal by the French Republic and named “Chevalier.”
Rabbi Schwartz served as Kiwanis Club President, Vice President of the Ministerial Association, served the Federated Jewish Charities, and was on the Mental Health Clinic Board and the Kidney Foundation Board. He was a professor at the University of West Florida as well as Pensacola Junior College. He held a Doctor of Divinity from Hebrew Union College, and a Masters of Hebrew Letters and a Bachelor of Hebrew Letters from William & Mary College.
The impact Rabbi Schwartz had on so many lives is vast and immeasurable. He touched all he met with warmth, love, and humor. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. His devotion, dedication, service, and bravery will live on in our hearts forever.
