Beloved husband of Arlene Lipson; Loving father of Jodi Faith Lipson, son-in-law, Larry Groner, and granddaughter, Johannah Beth Groner, who always brought a smile to his face; son, Jonathan David Lipson; Dear brother of Howard (Wilma); and generous and loving nieces and nephews. His daughter Sheri Ellen Bidwell tragically predeceased him.
Leon Lipson died peacefully of complications from Alzheimer’s disease on May 8, 2015—his 89th birthday—in Hollywood, Florida. Born May 8, 1926, in Brooklyn of immigrant parents, Mr. Lipson received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Columbia University and a bachelor in accounting from Youngstown University. He was an aviation cadet in the U.S. Army Air Corps, training to be a B-17 navigator, and received the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Freemason and a Shriner.
Mr. Lipson worked at Republic Steel Mill, first in Youngstown, Ohio, and then in Chicago, as superintendent of mechanical maintenance. After three decades, he retired from the mill in 1978, moving to Florida, where he was supervisor of maintenance of physical plant for the University of Miami. He retired again in 1993, moving to Palm Isles in Boynton Beach, where he served on the master condo board. He retired from the board in late 2012, receiving a distinguished service award. Throughout his life, he worked as an accountant for the Internal Revenue Service. He traveled widely and read voraciously. He spent his last two years lovingly cared for in the memory care unit at the Peninsula assisted living facility in Hollywood.
