June 18, 1941 – November 8, 2018
John A. Slattery, “Grandpa John,” of Delray Beach, FL passed away on November 8, 2018 at the age of 77 with his wife, Joane Rosen-Sutton, by his side. Loving husband, proud father and devoted grandfather, John will forever be remembered by Joane; his children Durk Barnhill, Elizabeth Moran and Megan McCloskey; his eight grandchildren Sam, Olivia, Georgina, Luis, Gianna, Lilliana, Logan and Beau; as well as his sister, Kate Lake, and five nephews.
John was born on June 18, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to John Aloysius Slattery and Anna Margaret Slattery. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Chartier.
John received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Notre Dame in 1959 and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Michigan in 1961. He enjoyed a long career in marketing with corporations such as Nestle, American Home Products (Wyeth) and The United Way, as well as several marketing agencies in New York City.
Most recently, John worked at Bedner’s Farm in Boynton Beach, FL driving tractor tours for school children and community groups around the property – he described it as “the best job I’ve ever had.” John and his family will always be grateful to the staff of Bedner’s for their support and kindness during his time at the farm and throughout his illness.
Grandpa John was a true sports fan, passionately supporting Notre Dame Football, where his grandson, Sam, graduated in the spring of 2018, as well as Williams College Women’s Soccer, where his granddaughter, Olivia, is currently wrapping up a standout career as a two-time Division III National Champion and an All-American goalkeeper. He loved watching Olivia play and would cheer her on from the sidelines as often as he could.
John was happiest when he was outdoors and in nature – he could often be found taking long, long bike rides and was in his element driving a jeep, tractor, snowmobile or pitching in on his sister Mary’s horse farm. He relished trips with Joane to national parks including Zion, Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
John will always be remembered for his kind spirit and sharp sense of humor. In true “Fighting Irish” style, John battled his cancer with bravery, determination and a grit that will continue to inspire those closest to him.
A memorial to honor and remember John will be held on Monday, November 19 from 11:30AM-12:00PM at Riverside –Stanetsky Memorial Chapels in Delray Beach, FL. A reception will follow from 12:00PM-2:00PM.
