Jack leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Ilene Harriet Cohen; three children, Alan & Ann Scott Cohen of Hoover, AL; Ilyssa & Steve Fox, of Flemington, NJ; and Mark & Debbie Hidajat Cohen of Manhattan, NY; and his four beloved grandchildren – for whom he affectionately and proudly carried the title “Papa” – Bradley Shane and Emily Paige Fox; and Skyler Max and Sam Jacob Hidajat Cohen.
He is also survived by his sister, Pearl and brother-in-law Stanley Goodman of Fort Lauderdale, FL and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Jack spent 22 years residing in Freehold, NJ before moving to Boynton Beach, FL in 1998.
The son of the late Yetta and Louis Cohen, Jack was raised in Brooklyn where he went to Yeshiva for primary and middle school, graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1952, and attended Brooklyn College.
Jack started his career as a trainee at Cunningham & Walsh Advertising Agency and then spent the next 38 years (1960 – 1998) working for Doyle Dayne Bernbach Advertising Agency (later DDB Needham and DDB Worldwide) in NYC. He entered the agency as an Estimator, became the Media Director of Newspaper and Out-of-Home Advertising and then worked his way up to Vice President of Newspaper and Out-of-Home Media.
It was at the agency’s holiday party in 1960 that he met the love of his life, Ilene.
Throughout his almost four decades with the agency, Jack – who was known as a “guru” by those in and outside of the industry – garnered many accolades including President’s Council of Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives Recognition Award in January 1984 and was twice selected as a member of U.S. Media’s All-Star Team by Media Week Magazine (1994 and 1996).
He served as the President of Certified Audit of Circulations, Inc. (1982 - 1985) and Director of the Agency Division (1980 - 1985) and was recognized for his distinguished service to the not-for-profit membership association in Washington D.C. in 1985.
Aside from being a hard and dedicated worker, Jack always made time for fun, too. He enjoyed playing tennis, walking, doing stand-up comedy, going to the theatre, and was a fervent newspaper reader. He also loved eating Rocky Road ice cream, al dente pasta, and food that was piping hot.
Together, Jack and Ilene enjoyed more than 50 cruises that took them on adventures to countless countries.
An avid sports fan, Jack stayed true to his roots and rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers, NY Mets, Giants, and Knicks.
Dining out was another passion of Jack’s. In fact, he had his very own table at Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse in NYC.
But, above all, Jack loved being with his family and friends.
A true mensch, Jack was a loving, caring, protective, witty, stubborn, loyal, and devoted husband, dad, papa, and friend.
And despite all of his business acumen and achievements, Jack said he wanted to be remembered for being a great son to his parents, great husband to his wife, great father to his children, and great papa to his grandchildren because that is ultimately what he believed mattered most in life.
The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 24 at I.J. Morris Funeral Home, 21 East Deer Park Road, Dix Hills, NY 11746, followed by graveside burial at 1 p.m. at New Montefiore Cemetery, 1180 Wellwood Ave., West Babylon, NY, 11704.
