Dorothy Levy, née Sinsky of West Palm Beach, Florida, passed away quietly on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at Lourdes Noreen McKeen in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born February 17, 1931, to Sylvia Adelberg and William Sinsky, a Baltimore lawyer known for his handshake goodwill. Dorothy studied singing at the Peabody Institute of Music and University of Maryland and lent her contralto voice to Gilbert + Sullivan plays with the U.S. Air Force Band.
In 1950, Dorothy married graphic designer Stanley Mossman, raising two daughters in Owings Mills, Maryland. Her life was dedicated to Beauty in all its forms. The couple built Azalea Hill, a California Case Study-inspired home with gardens designed by James Rose, that splashed across the pages of national shelter magazines, including Better Homes and Gardens and American Home. “How much happier would your home be with color brimming over like this?” asked one article.
Her acuity for spatial design and her eye for fine art and antiques, led to her career as a licensed interior designer with the H. Chambers Co. Dorothy opened the firm’s Palm Beach design office, eventually moving there full-time in the late 1970s.
Dorothy and Joseph Levy, married in 1984, and were reported to be Palm Beach’s tallest couple, a moniker that also might be applied to her last significant relationship with Richard Block.
Dorothy’s exquisite entertaining skills led to philanthropic and fundraising work for the American Cancer Society, Israel’s Ben Gurion University, among other charities. Her legacy of designing space, gracious hospitality, and producing large-scale events are among the gifts she passed to her children. Dorothy loved ice cream and cookies more than other food, another present passed down to her offspring. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Andrea Beck of Vero Beach, Florida, and Hilary Jay of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and granddaughter Jaxson Benjamin of Melbourne, Australia. She was predeceased by her sister Adele Sinsky Propper.
A funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, 1:30 PM, at Eternal Light Memorial Gardens cemetery, 11520 State Road 7, Boynton Beach, FL 33473.
Donations can be made in Dorothy Levy's name to Trustbridge Hospice Care, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407, (561) 848-5200. Alternatively, consider planting a memorial tree in Israel.
