Carl Wohl, of Boynton Beach, died peacefully on Dec. 29, 2023, at 86. He was the eldest child of Ruth and Alfred (Edward) Wohl of Brooklyn, New York. While growing up, Carl did his best to stay out of trouble and, sometimes, to set a good example for his sister Sheryl and brother Scott.
Carl enjoyed reading, listening to music (particularly Jewish music), going on train rides and relaxing on any beach or in any pool. He got a thrill watching family members in stock car races—and was issued enough speeding tickets to suggest that he wished for his own racetrack moments. Throughout his life, one of his favorite trips was driving to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indy 500, a race he attended at least half a dozen times, most recently in 2022.
Carl graduated from Samuel J. Tilden High School in 1955. He attended classes at Brooklyn College but did not complete a degree. While on vacation in Miami in the early 1960s, he met Susan Fox of Washington Heights, New York. He and Susan were married in the Bronx on Nov. 27, 1963. They resided in Brooklyn and later in New Jersey, where they raised their two daughters, Lisa and Jessica, spending most of their Jersey years in East Brunswick.
Carl began working in the 1950s in theater managerial roles for United Artists and later ran the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He then engaged in his love of travel, running Empress Travel and Getaway Travel, two travel agencies in New Jersey. He enjoyed numerous opportunities to travel with his family and occasionally on his own—including the time he thought he’d booked himself on a tour of Venice, Italy, only to find out when he studied the itinerary that he was headed to Vienna, Austria. Carl later became a teacher to those who also wanted to work in travel, operating The Travel Institute, a school in Jersey City, New Jersey.
As the travel industry evolved, so did Carl’s work. He began driving people to and from airports all around the New Jersey/New York City area. Whether through loud conversation or his signature singing and humming, Carl would ensure it was a memorable ride.
In 2009, Carl and Susan made their farthest move, to Boynton Beach, Florida, where they continued to spend time with dear friends who had also relocated from New Jersey. Carl soon made new beloved pals as he spent long hours floating in the pool, often with a wet book by his side.
Carl was always an avid reader of books and newspapers. He began taking classes on poetry and other topics at the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center, which he fondly referred to as his “daycare.” Going to those classes, in person or online during the height of the pandemic, was one of his treasured pastimes in his retirement.
Carl Wohl is survived by Susan, his wife of 60 years; sister Sheryl (Barry) Linton and brother Scott (Robin) Wohl; daughters Lisa Freeman and Jessica Weinraub; sons-in-law Steve Freeman and Mark Weinraub; and grandchildren Rachel, Madeline, Abby and Noah.
A private service will be held.
