Janice “Jenny” Rodriguez Doré peacefully departed from this life at her home on Good Friday, April 18, 2025, and went on to her eternal glory. She was 87 years old. Janice embraced and cherished her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, sister, and friend. As with all things she put her mind to, she excelled and became the very best examples of each to all who knew her.
Janice was born on January 28, 1938, in Galveston, Texas, and moved to Delcambre, Louisiana when she was two years old, making Delcambre her hometown. She attended Delcambre High School and graduated with the Class of 1956. She loved telling how one of her biggest accomplishments in high school was making the All-State basketball team. That was because she only played half-court defense and scored two points in her entire career! It was during her high school years that Janice met her on again, off again, but best friend, George. Little did they realize that this marked the beginning of a love story that would include 67 years of marriage and bless them with four (4) children. Together, George and Janice shared a life well live, which filled their home (wherever it was at the time) with love, joy, and a fair share of humor.
After graduating high school, Janice moved to Lafayette and started college at Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (SLI). However, graduation wasn’t in the cards just yet. On April 19, 1958 she and George were married and moved to Port Sulphur, Louisiana to begin their married life. She gave birth to a daughter before moving back home to Delcambre where she gave birth to her three sons. During that time, she worked many odd jobs, including as a substitute teacher. It was from this experience that she found her calling. She returned to college, now USL, and finished her degree, becoming a teacher.
For the majority of her 29 year teaching career, she would teach at Delcambre High School, specifically seventh and eighth grade English and Language Arts. She became somewhat of a gatekeeper. Throughout the years students could not get out of seventh or eighth grade without being in her classes. She helped start the Gifted and Talented program and Remedial program, both in Iberia Parish. She was able to teach all four of her children and her the eldest grandchild. She had found her place. Janice loved teaching! Her husband would tease her saying “Janice, you would teach even if they would not pay you”. She became the teacher the students feared most at the beginning of the school year but by the end, they loved her like a second mother. Her family is so proud of her accomplishments as a teacher and the mother she became to everyone who needed her. Even with all the trials and tribulations that came along with teaching, she would have happily did it all again. She loved all the children whose lives she had the privilege of touching.
Janice was a dedicated member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, where from an early age (15) she taught religion classes and later served as one of the first female lecturers. She found great comfort and strength in her faith, which she passed on to each of her children and grandchildren. Her love of life extended to her family, of whom she was incredibly proud. Janice adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, and cherished every moment spent with them. She loved sharing their accomplishments with friends and always beamed with pride. All her grandchildren have fond memories of “Granny”! She always found ways big and small to remind them that they were loved.
Janice survived by her husband of 67 years George Allen Doré; her children Pamela Ann Doré, David Allen Doré (Kathryn), Todd Anthony Doré (Elise), and Mark Allen Doré (Angie); her brother, Clifford Rodriguez (Timmie); her sister Lorraine R. Saunier; her grandchildren, Christopher, Paul, Callie (Kevin), Michael (Sidney), Jude (Lee), Erik (Ellie), Jared (Angel), Abigail, Olivia, Patrick, and Thomas; and two great-granddaughters, Amelia and Helena. She was preceded in death by her Parents Dilta Vincent Rodriguez Love, Chester Love, Clifton Rodriguez, and grandson, Jacob Michael Doré.
May Janice’s soul and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
A gathering of family and friends will be held beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Rosary being prayed at 10:15 a.m., and concluding with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Janice’s life at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, all taking place at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Delcambre. Fr. Buddy Breaux will be the celebrant. Following the Mass, Janice will be laid to rest in the Our Lady of the Lake Mausoleum.
