William was saved and baptized in the First Baptist Church of Cement Oklahoma in 1967 where his letter
Still remains. He is proud to say that he was born early enough to experience pulling cotton for 2 cents a pound, chopping cotton for 75 cents an hour, hauling hay for 1 ½ cents per bale and cutting broom corn for $1.00 per hour. He was a 1967 graduate of Cement High School where his oilfield career began, working for Young’s Well Service after school and on the weekends for $1.50 an hour.
Upon receiving his draft notice, he enlisted in the Army for a 3 year tour of duty, where he served 2 years in Germany as a crewman on M-60 Battle Tanks. After William’s enlistment was completed he settled in Oklahoma City with his wife Sherry and continued to work in the oilfield, until cancer stopped him in June of 2010.
This is What William requested to have read at his funeral
“I met my one and only wife Sherry while in the service, I was 21 and she was sweet 16.” “Thank you Russell for asking me to write to your sister, a person could never have a better mate, friend and wife.” The first time I saw Sherry in person, I could not believe the girl at the age of 15 could be this beautiful and fall in love with a country hick like me. She got my class ring the first week we were together, engagement ring the second week and the third week I was sent to Germany. I came back to the states and married the beauty! We must not have thought of long courtships. Sherry came to Germany in October, and the day she walked in the Frankfurt’s Airport, my heart started pounding louder than a drum! This was the third time I had seen my angel. Because Angels are sent to earth to do some of the Lord’s work and I know there are angels, because I married one August 14, 1970 and I’m still with her after 46 years. I want to thank my wife Sherry for taking care of me through life. If she was not by my side, then she was leading me or pushing me to carry on in life. If you saw one set of footprints, it was because the Lord was carrying Sherry on his shoulders so that she could carry me.
I try to imagine what heaven is like; do you reunite with your loved ones and relive your life again, but without harsh and tragic events like we suffer here on Earth in a life that has death? Do we go to a Large field and lie in bright flowers and sweet smells in a lifeless state and listen to the music we love to listen to? As each day comes to an ending I realize it is closing in my life, the next day is the new beginning of my life by the grace of God.
