Shirley Ann Clay (Shirley Granny), age 74, has changed addresses. Surrounded by family in her home, she went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. She was born on October 2, 1939 to Orville and Delia Pennington in Wilburton, OK.
In 1955 she married the love of her life, Richard Clay. After graduating from Capitol Hill High School in 1957, she enjoyed being a stay-at-home wife and mother before beginning her 32- year career with the United States Postal Service. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle for over 50 years and served faithfully as church secretary, treasurer, and Vacation Bible School Director… as well as numerous other volunteer duties. Aside from spending quality time with her family, traveling was one of her greatest passions in life. In June of 2013 Shirley was able to visit her 48th state, which allowed her to see every state in the continental United States.
Granny loved cooking & baking and everyone could hardly wait until Christmas time to enjoy her delicious candy! She loved keeping up with her beautiful flowers, in her multiple flowerbeds, strategically placed around her immaculate yard. Shirley Granny was also an avid sports fan with 3 favorite teams: OU Sooners, Dallas Cowboys, and the OKC Thunder. Now she will have the best seat in the house for all of her favorite games!
Her collection of angels was representative of how others perceived her in her day-to-day affairs, but was also very symbolic of who God had created her to be during her mission here on earth. You rarely saw her without her wearing one of her numerous Angel accessories. Shirley Granny was also known to her granddaughters as having a great sense of style. She loved bling and animal print and even had a pair of Miss Me jeans!
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard Clay; parents Orville and Delia Pennington;
brothers Bob Pennington, Hubert Pennington, and David Pennington; and sister Bonnie Pennington.
Survivors include daughters Vicki DiDomenico & husband Scott of Oklahoma City, OK, and Tracy Wilson & husband Terry of Park Hill, OK; and son Jeffrey Clay & wife Shelly of Blanchard, OK.
7 grandchildren: Chris Birdsong and wife Gina, Jed Lung and wife Amy, Nicole Lung, Megan Cox and husband Kirk, Heather Birdsong and husband Marcus, Lauren Clay, and Carson Clay.
10 great-grandchildren: Tyler, Aly, Jasmine, Josh, ScottLynn, Maddox, Rylynn, Rimie, Chloie, and Beau.
Sisters-in-law: Maxine Pennington of Lyman, WY and Gloria Clay of St. Thomas US Virgin Islands, and a host of nieces & nephews.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend who will be greatly missed! However, when you think of her and begin to get sad, always remember the words she taught us all to live by… "And This Too Shall Pass!"
Shirley’s children would like to extend their deepest and most sincere appreciation to all the family and friends who have been prayerfully standing in the gap with the entire family since October. The outpouring of kind words and numerous meals during the last week of mom’s life was a true expression of the body of Christ at its finest.
We would like to say thank you to Terri Liggins and the entire Sunnylane Funeral Home staff for assisting us in arranging a wonderful celebration of our mother’s beautiful life.
Additionally we would also like to extend a very special thank you to Pastor Phillip Jones and the entire Sunnylane Southern Baptist Church for making our family feel like a part of your family.
And finally we want to express our greatest love and gratitude to three of the most compassionate and kind-hearted women ever, who our mother was blessed to have caring for her during her final days of life. Markita McPhearson-Tate, Kennisha Cooper, and Amber Elghezlane… all of Excell Home Care & Hospice… were undoubtedly handpicked by God himself to tend to one of His own Angels here on earth. Never have we been more comfortable and/or confident in the quality of care and the personal commitment that you each demonstrated every time you were caring for our mother. We will be forever blessed and compelled to help others in need because of the relationships you each fostered with our family that last week.
