Marcella Madeline Smothers passed away Saturday January 9, 2021 at the age of 87. She was born in Butler, Oklahoma on March 17, 1933 to George W. Vickers and Lizzie Mae (Gray) Vickers. She worked numerous jobs beginning as a teenager working in her fathers convenient stores/gas stations. She worked as a Soda-Jerk to make money to buy her school clothes; she went with her family to California where they picked cotton & fruit. They quickly got tired of doing that and moved back to Oklahoma. She went to Montgomery, Alabama two months out of High School to marry Sammie Smothers who was stationed there. They were married June 6, 1951. In Montgomery, Alabama she worked in sales for a Jeweler and was Supervisor of two employees. She later worked as a Secretary for the State of Alabama. In 1954 at seven months pregnant she went by ship to be with her husband who was stationed in Japan. There she had two children; Janet who was born shortly after moving to Japan and Vicki who was born 22 months after Janet. Marcella also worked while in Japan as a Supervisor over both Military & Civilian employees in the Secretarial & Clerical field. Later they moved back to the states and were stationed in Enid, Oklahoma and in 1957 Carolyn their third child was born. Marcella was a homemaker & mother from that time forward until the girls (Janet, Vicki, and Carolyn) became adults and ventured out on their own. In 1980 Marcella & Sammie became Real Estate Agents. A few years later they went into business together as realtors and investors.
Marcella loved Music & she loved to sing. She sang in High School, she sang in bands with Sammie & friends while in the Military, she sang in church with Sammie & daughter Vicki while living in Sevierville TN in the mid 70’s; every Saturday Night the churches in the surrounding area had a singing and the local church they were members of (Henderson Chapel) would take the youth choir to sing and Marcella, Sammie, & Vicki went to sing too! Marcella sang in the choir at Sunny Lane Baptist church. Marcella loved to play YAHTZEE with her children, grandchildren, nieces (Brenda & Teresa) and anyone who would play! She was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She & Sammie gardened and planted corn, green beans, tomatoes, black-eyed peas, okra, cucumbers, eggplant, yellow crookneck squash, zucchini squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, and strawberries. Whatever they planted came up in abundance and they would give some to their neighbors, family, and friends. Marcella also canned and what she didn’t she would freeze.
