Being part of a military family took Lisa on a journey across states and countries, from Texas, to Germany, and Louisiana, to Oklahoma. At the age of 9, she embraced independence during her time at a Louisiana State School for the intellectually disabled. She fostered skills there that she cherished for life.
Lisa’s high school years were spent at Westside School in Mid-Del District. In honor of her senior year in 1982, the Special Prom was created. An event that changed over the years, but still continues today for students to have a fun and special time.
A few months after graduation, Lisa moved into Reliant Living Center: Bryant Place. Soon after, she met Bobby Slaughter, the love of her life. Together, they shared countless moments of joy, from attending ball games to enjoying meals at McDonald’s, all while dutifully caring for Lisa's cherished teddy bear.
Lisa developed a special relationship with her niece, Jessica Maker, and great niece and great nephew, Jaxcie and Tenny Maker. She was always eager to give them a head bump with an “ah ah ah ahhhh”. Her very special way of showing love.
Lisa’s presence was a ray of sunshine wherever she went. Her love for decks of cards was legendary, with her purse always stocked with a plethora of them. She had a knack for a solo card game that remained a mystery to all but herself, adding to her mystique and charm.
Her infectious laughter had a way of brightening every room and spreading joy to all, and her unwavering politeness, marked by countless thank yous and welcomes, left a mark on everyone around her.
Lisa had many friends and wonderful, loving caregivers at Reliant Living over her 42 years of calling it home. Her family will be forever grateful that she had so many people who cared as deeply for her as they did.
Lisa lived a life that was well lived. She defied odds and left a legacy. She was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and resilience, and her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to all that were fortunate enough to know her.
A celebration of life is planned for Monday, March 18 at 10:00am at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home in Del City. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 17 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm
