Laura Evelyn Thompson, age 88, passed away on January 16, 2022, from a short illness and the long-term complications of a stroke a few years ago. Evelyn was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1933, near Hammond OK, the 4th of 5 children of Luther Edward and Ava May (Powell) Watkins.
Evelyn grew up on a farm around the Woodward area, and loved playing basketball. She graduated from Noble High School in 1952, then while working for SW Bell Telephone Company, she met her husband, Derryl Thompson and was married in 1955. She helped put Derryl through engineering school at the University of Tulsa, while working for the Civil Service in the early days of setting up the world-wide communications network system. They settled in Del City near Tinker Air Force Base and Evelyn was active in many community activities, including being a fifty-year charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church, and also enjoyed square dancing, reading and traveling. Evelyn worked as a part-time realtor and managed the Knapp Shoe Store at the GM plant one day a week.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Rhonda Thompson Wilpitz and husband Ken, daughter Debra Callicoat and husband Dale. Grandchildren Kristin Wilpitz, Tori Wilpitz, Megan Callicoat and Dalton Callicoat. She also leaves behind special memories cherished from all of her travels with old friends and her extended family of nieces and nephews. She will be missed!
There is a viewing on Friday, January 21 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home in Del City, OK. Services to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at the grave site near the pond at Resthaven Memory Gardens, 500 SW 104th St., OKC, OK.
