Joe Louis Burkhart, 79 of McLoud went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 17, 2012. He was born on April 12, 1932 in Oklahoma City to William and Georgia Mae Burkhart. He married his wife Katherine on October 16, 1982.
He served four years in the United Sates Navy aboard the USS Picking Destroyer during the Korean War. He continued to serve our country for 42 years working at Tinker Air Force Base at the Air Logistics Center. He started as a painter’s helper and through his hard work and dedication was promoted many times and finally to Branch Chief of Engineering and Planning. During his career he earned the Award for Meritorious Civilian Service. He retired in September, 1990 which allowed him more time to spend in his gardens and reading. He purchased a lake home at Lake Eufaula where he spent many hours fishing, boating, and playing with his grandchildren. He was an involved member of the First United Methodist Church of McLoud. He was also a 32nd Degree member of the Myrtle Chapter of the Masonic Lodge.
Joe is survived by his wife, Katherine of McLoud. 2 Sons, William Keith Burkhart and wife Cindy of Marlow, and Gregory Louis Burkhart of Norman. 1 Stepdaughter, Connie Lee Elwood and husband Patrick of Oklahoma City. 1 Stepson Jerry Dean Gitthens and wife Steffani of Choctaw. 6 Grandchildren; Senaca, Sara, Sean, Allison, Tyler and Conner, and 5 Great Grandchildren. 3 Sister; Helen McClung and husband Mac of Del City. Sue Ann Manley of Del City, and Adoree’ Carr and husband Don of Midwest City.
1 Brother; Arthur Burkhart and wife Wanda of Edmond. Plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We all will truly miss him, especially his smile and beautiful blue eyes.
Preceded in death by his parents William and Georgia Mae (Skeen) Burkhart and brother Billy Burkhart of Oklahoma City.
Viewing will be Wednesday, February 22, 2012 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. at Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, 5005 S.E. 29th Street, Del City, Oklahoma.
Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church, 415 S. 8th Street, McLoud, Oklahoma
