ELIZABETH PAULINE “POLLY” SHELTON
Elizabeth Pauline “Polly” Shelton, a member of the Greatest Generation, was born January 24, 1924, in Fourmile, KY, and she entered eternal rest January 17, 2022, in Oklahoma City, OK.
Polly is survived by daughters Donna Steward and Ann Shelton, grandsons Chad Steward and Michael Pittman, and great- granddaughters Brea Haynes of Norman and Michaela Pittman.
She was predeceased by her husband, Don Shelton, her parents, James and Lydia Hibbard, her brothers, Dallas Hibbard and Earl Hibbard, and her sisters, Euna Parker, Thelma Ridings, and Billie Violet.
Polly was raised in a warm, loving family. She stated many time that her family was poor but didn’t feel poor because they were so loved. After graduating at Lone Jack High School, Polly moved to Cincinnati, OH to work. While in Cincinnati, in 1944, she took the bold action of enlisting in the U.S. Army where she proudly served throughout the remainder of World War II.
While she was stationed at Borden Hospital in Chickasha, she met a young soldier, Don Shelton. They began dating, quickly fell in love, and were married June 30, 1946. Don and Polly enjoyed 62 years of a long and happy marriage until Don’s passing in 2008.
After her Honorable Discharge from the Army, Polly worked as a secretary in Security at the FAA and retired from that position. She also spent much time as a stay-at-home Mom. Her last employment outside the home was with the Steward Law Firm, where she excelled.
Polly was a loving, involved mother. She was a homeroom mother, a wise and nurturing advisor, education advocate, and always supported Donna and Ann in every way. She was always available when they needed her.
She spent countless hours nurturing her grandsons, Chad and Michael. She was always there for them in their childhood and teen years. The grandsons always loved visiting Grandma’s, especially the great meals and snacks she prepared for them. Her love for her grandsons is a legacy that will be with them throughout their lives.
Polly was also a wonderful great-grandmother to great-granddaughters Brea and Michaela. Both are fortunate to have a warm, loving great-grandmother be with them into their young adulthood.
Polly was not only loving and kind to her family, but with her friends and strangers. Most of the people who know Polly well describe her as one the sweetest, most kind persons they have known. But, with her sweet spirit was a deep sense of right and wrong. She had an iron will when supporting what was right and opposing what was wrong.
Polly had a deep, fundamental, and abiding faith. She also had the strength and courage to oppose intolerance and bigotry in her church. Her life is a testament to the power of just simply doing what is right.
Polly’s life and loving spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
