Doris Jean Thompson Jones was born September 15, 1934, to Clara and Floyd Thompson in Carnegie, OK, the second of four children.
Doris grew up on the family farm in Alfalfa, OK. She said of farm life, “It was hard. I was treated just like one of the boys. I had to pick whatever was in season: cotton or peanuts.” Growing up, Doris was an excellent basketball player and loved to play the game with her dad and have tea parties with her mom. Once she turned 18, she left the farm life and moved to Oklahoma City, OK.
Doris met the love of her life, WE Jones, and they married on August 20, 1960. They were married for 64 years and raised five children, LaGeanna, Stan, Christi, Mike, and Monty.
Doris built strong relationships with each and every one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. They all know how much she loved each of them. Her grandchildren remember her infectious laughter and smile. Doris was so proud of her wonderfully large family, and even at age 90, she kept up with their lives through text messages or Facebook. Doris counted her blessings, literally. She kept a running list of all of her family names, including middle names and birthdates. Doris led by a Christian example which was evident in her daily life and raising her children. They raised Christian teachers, song leaders, and preachers.
Doris was a smart, detail-oriented girl. She could type 135 words per minute and was an expert speller! She was an executive assistant to bank presidents and even the President of the University of Oklahoma, William (Bill) Banowsky.
Doris was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also an amazing cook. The highlight of each year was her turkey and dressing for her huge family at Thanksgiving. Doris would spend hours and hours in the kitchen. Her other specialties were chicken fried steak, hello dollies, and her famous chocolate pie! She loved to bake; sometimes, when she could not sleep, she would just bake a pie! Doris was good at just about everything, but she was pretty much a professional seamstress. She made most of her stylish clothes and could make almost anything just by looking at a picture. Doris was always well dressed in the latest styles, which she had sewn herself. And, of course, we can’t forget she always had the matching purse, shoes, hat, and just recently, her new stylish blue glasses that highlighted her beautiful blue eyes.
Doris loved to watch the OKC Thunder and the Sooners play softball and football, but her favorite was watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren excel in all the many sports they played and excelled in up through the college level. This past year, Doris attended the NCAA Softball Tournament, and this spring, she got to go to a Sooners softball game in the new Love’s Stadium. She was looking forward to watching her great-granddaughter play college softball this spring.
Doris also loved to travel, as long as there was no flying involved. She loved RV road trips. Her favorite trips were family trips to Colorado and trips with friends to South Texas. Just last fall, they took a road trip to South Carolina to visit grandkids, and she loved every minute of it.
Doris and WE walked hand in hand everywhere they went and called each other sweetie. They had a lifetime of love and laughter and Godly living. When looking through her phone, you will find endless sweet selfies of her and WE smiling at each other. Their love was real and everlasting. Doris was a beautiful soul inside and out. Her family was her life, and her love for each of us was beyond measure. We all count ourselves lucky to have been a part of her family. We will miss her so much each and every day.
A funeral service for Doris will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, at Southwest Church of Christ, 3031 SW 104th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73159.
