Wesley Stewart Stephenson, 66, passed away at Huntsville Hospital on Friday, July 13th, 2018.
He was born in Decatur on March 1st, 1952 to Otha Elton and Mildred Stephenson. Stewart was a lifelong resident of Decatur and graduated from Decatur High School in 1970. He valued his affiliation with Decatur High School and cherished the friendships with his fellow classmates. Stewart felt his association with Coach Earl Morris and his teammates played a significant role in his life and the person he became. Stewart served as a basketball official at the high school and college level. As in all situations, he cherished the comradery he experienced with his fellow referees.Stewart was an avid golfer. He enjoyed the competition and the life long friends he gained on the course. He was honored to be an inductee into the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Church and faith were always an integral part of Stewart’s life. He was an active member of the youth group at Ninth Street Methodist and remained a member there to its closure. At that time, he became an enthusiastic member of his new church, The Church at Stone River. He proudly served on the board of both these churches.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 45 years, Donna Gunter Stephenson; Son Wes Stephens and his wife Anne. His brother Ray Stephenson,Sister Gayle Aycock
Three grandchildren: Sam, Anna Kate and Charlotte
On Tuesday, July 17th visitation will be from 3:30-6:00 with a Celebration of Life Service immediately after at The Church at Stone River: 3014 Danville Road SW Decatur, Alabama 35603. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Church at Stone River or the Committee on Church Cooperation.
