Red was a gifted athlete at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama receiving the Grogan Trophy honoring him as the most outstanding football player in the tri-cities. He signed a professional baseball contract with the NewYork Giants right after high school, but after one year in the minor leagues, he realized the importance of education and signed a football scholarship with Howard College (later named Samford University) where he lettered in basketball and baseball, pitching the only no-hitter recorded in Samford history. Even being involved in sports, he was a member of the National Honor Society, and graduated in four years.
Students in his classes at Calhoun College and his players on Calhoun’s Baseball Team where he taught in the business department and was the assistant baseball coach were his pride and joy along with his pride in his son, Jim, becoming a medical doctor and his daughter Missy, becoming a doctor in education.
Red joined First Baptist Church and became a member of the King-Bowen Sunday school class loving attending church every Sunday. He loves God and is looking forward to pitching on the Lord’s team.
