Preceded in death by his father Richard G. Pickrel, brothers Richard M. Pickrel and Robert W. Pickrel, Tom is survived by his loving wife of nearly 47 years, Elaine; his children Jeff (Patti) Pickrel of Centerville, Deb (Russell) Boiarsky of Columbus and Greg (Candice) Pickrel of Waynesville; his grandchildren Maggie and Max Pickrel, A.J. and Anna Boiarsky and Neva, Glenna, Walter and Truman Pickrel; his mother Janet Pickrel; his siblings John Pickrel, Mary Ann Pickrel, James (Connie) Pickrel, Beth (John) Tranovich, William (Leah) Pickrel, Catherine Pickrel, Daniel (Julie) Pickrel and sister-in-law Ann Hallum.
Above all, Tom was dedicated to his family and a man of quiet but firm faith. He and Elaine traversed the country, visiting 40 states by motorcycle, RV and train, but their greatest joy was always in returning home to their family and especially their grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tobias Funeral Home at 5471 Far Hills Ave. in Kettering. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Kettering, with graveside service to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Tom to the Neuro-Oncology Research Fund (Fund # 314420) at the James Comprehensive Cancer Center, 660 Ackerman Rd., P.O. Box 183112, Columbus, OH 43218-3112, Attn: Development Office.
Tom’s family would like to thank Dr. Vinay Puduvalli and all of his staff at in the Department of Neuro-Oncology at The James Comprehensive Cancer Center at The Ohio State University, as well as the outstanding nurses, palliative care specialists and doctors in the Intensive Care Unit at Miami Valley Hospital for their compassion, skill and dedication in all aspects of Tom’s care.
