Sylvia Shepherd Yancey, a 20 year resident of Bellbrook Oh, passed away on July 11, 2015. She is survived by her two sons, Christopher, and William, as well as her grandchildren Kara and William. Our mother was born Sylvia Ann Shepherd, on March 4th 1924, at Baltimore's John Hopkins Hospital, to her parents William Shepherd, and Karrie Dykes. Sylvia dedicated her life to making the world a better place. One person at a time. Sylvia was a Registered Public Health Nurse, and she traveled from rural eastern Long Island farming enclaves to the slippery winter back roads of Western Pennsylvania's impoverished coal mine communities vaccinating children against polio. Also, for many years Sylvia practiced Child Development Psychology, for at-risk youth. Certainly a world of distance from her start at New York City's Harlem Hospital. Our mother created an impressive career resume, that spanned many degrees and diplomas, which includes a Masters Degree from Long Island University, Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Sociology), Case Western Reserve University (Public Health Nurse), Harlem Hospital (Registered Nurse, New York State). In addition, she served in a volunteer capacity at many non-profit organizations such as: Howard County General Hospital, Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Program, Red Cross of Dayton Ohio. Of note, it was Sylvia's faith in God that held her, and keep her focused on providing services to humanity. In 1996, Sylvia was installed as a Deacon in the 1st Presbyterian Church, Yellow Springs Ohio. Sylvia's family will hold a local memorial service for Ohio friends and family at Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills Chapel, 5471 Far Hills Ave, Dayton Ohio 45429: 937-435-2273 The following weekend, she will return to her adopted and beloved hometown Somerset Pa. Those memorial services will be held at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, 494 W Main St, Somerset, PA 15501, (814) 616-2913 , Saturday July 25th at 10 am. Sylvia Shepherd Yancey will be laid to her final rest next to her husband, Clarence R. Yancey, at Husband Cemetery.
