Gabel, Steve James, M.D., age 58, passed away at University of Cincinnati Hospital on July 17, 2018. He was predeceased by his mother Rita Gabel in 2016. He is survived by: his father James L. Gabel, DVM of Dayton, Ohio; his daughter Leslie Gabel Kwon (Brian) their daughter Lillian Kwon, and expecting their second child in November, all of Boston, MA; his son Thomas James Gabel of Evansville, IN; his former wife, Susan Leigh Gabel of Evansville, IN; his sister Debra Rill (Bruce) and their sons Alex, Eric, and Adam of Dayton, OH; his sister Theresa Gabel (Reggie Lakups) of Columbus, OH; and brother James P. Gabel (Stacy) and their daughter Katherine of Dayton, OH. Steve graduated as a football letterman from Centerville High School in 1978. He then graduated from the University of Dayton where he also played football. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University, completed a general surgery internship in Chicago, and his orthopedic residency program at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. Dr. Gabel then finished his training with a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery, with Dr. Arthur Manoli, Detroit, MI. He returned to Dayton to practice orthopedic surgery for nearly ten years then moved his practice and his family to Evansville, IN. In addition to his love of orthopedic surgery, Steve had a lifelong passion for Thoroughbred horse racing. Together with his father and closest friends, he founded Bone Doctors Stable based in Indiana. He was a fine fisherman and a colorful golfer! Steve was always a pleasure to be with, and appreciated for his integrity, sharp wit and enduring sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Tobias Funeral Home at Far Hills Avenue and Rahn Rd. in Dayton, OH.
