Shirley M. Snyder, 88, of Beavercreek, Ohio passed away peacefully January 24, 2023 at Arden Courts of Kenwood. She is preceded in death by husband of 41 years, John L (Jack) Snyder, parents Charles and Sara McGowan, sister and brother-in-law Mary Virginia and Johnny Logue, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Lillian McGowan, sister-in-law Jean McGowan, sister-in-law Irene McGowan, and Carol Moody.
Shirley is survived by her children Larry Snyder of Dayton, OH, Cathy Mitsoff of Beavercreek, OH, Andrew Snyder of Bellefontaine, OH, Richard Snyder (Meiko Sato) of San Pedro, CA and Jane Snyder Patrick (Jesse) of Blue Ash, OH, two grandchildren Rachel (Crystal) Mitsoff and Benjamin (Deidra) Mitsoff and their children Cristian and Isley. She is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Paul McGowan (Margaret), Phil McGowan, Ned McGowan, Pat McGowan (Micheleann), and Ray McGowan (Camille), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and one very special Aunt Marjorie Ivory.
Shirley was born, raised, and educated in Pittsburgh, PA, where she completed a bookkeeping program at Point Park Junior College with additional classes taken at Duquesne University. She put those skills to great use working as the "CFO at Snyder, Inc" while raising five kids as her husband traveled much of each year for his career at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She was a lifelong learner, enrolling at Sinclair Community College in her late 50's to take classes like "Tax Law" just for fun. She was an avid communicator and somehow never missed an opportunity to send cards for every birthday, anniversary, and special occasion to her large extended family.
When she wasn’t driving 5 kids around to sports or band events, you could find her reading a book. She enjoyed learning about everything. She went on every school field trip and girl/cub scout trip her schedule would allow. She was committed to her kids and made many sacrifices in order for them to succeed.
She really loved being in nature and was excited to share something new she’d learned or found. She was fascinated by nature and collected bird feathers, dead insects, gorgeous fall leaves, pine cones, and interesting bark. She could identify every tree and wildflower in the woods.
After her kids were grown and husband passed away, she spent more time on other interests. She travelled to Ireland, and made pilgrimages to The Holy Land, Fatima, Oberammergau, Santiago, Torino, Rome, and to Greece, where she walked in the footsteps of St Paul the Apostle. She attended St Luke Catholic Church for over 40 years. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Shirley's family will receive friends, Sunday, January 29, 2023 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at Tobias Funeral Home, 3970 Dayton - Xenia Road, Beavercreek, Ohio.
