Rick was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 24th 1959 to Phyllis (Sams) and Richard Lackey. His father preceded him in death in 1981. He shared a dream childhood with his sister, Jennie (Lackey) Kaplan. Their close bond continued into adulthood. He attended Centerville High School and married his high school sweetheart, Nina (Diamante) and in 1981 he became a proud father to his daughter Brooke (Lackey) Cervantes.
His career started as a chef at Chi Chi’s Mexican Restaurant chain in Centerville, OH. In 1983 he won an occupational work experience award for teaching high school seniors. He was then recruited by Al Coplan to work in his New Orlean’s restaurant chain. Rick then relocated back to Dayton and worked many years as a construction supervisor for Hills and Ryland Homes where he received an award for supervisor of the year in 1995. He most recently was working at Midas for over ten years before he retired in May 2021.
Rick loved classic, “old school” rock and roll. He enjoyed watching sports and playing fantasy football. He spent his free time fishing and gardening. He loved to read, Stephen King was a favorite author. He often said, “If you know how to read you can do anything in life”.
Rick treasured time with his family. He looked forward to his annual visits to Las Vegas where he spent quality time with his daughter, Brooke Cervantes; son in law, Daniel Cervantes and grandchildren; Michaela and Vance Cervantes. He also enjoyed many visits from his niece, Emily Kaplan and nephews, Daniel and Thomas Kaplan. They loved their Uncle Rick. He was very fortunate to have a loving relationship with his devoted mother, Phyllis Lackey who was a great comfort in his final days. Rick also leaves behind Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many friends who we hope can join us for a visitation and memorial on Sunday, February 20th. We will gather from 2-4pm at Tobias Funeral Home to share memories and celebrate the life of Rick Lackey.
