SMITH, Jewel S. (Joe), age 82 of Dayton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, September 1, 2014. Jewel was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha M. (nee Chandler) and Jewel S. “Speedy” Smith, Sr.; 5 siblings, Valley Mae, Deloris Marie, Dolly Mae, Wilbur, and Eugene; son-in-law Jerry Head, Jr.; brother-in-law Donald Weimert; father and mother-in-law, Lester and Margaret Weimert. Jewel is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joan (nee Weimert), 3 sons, Anthony (Jill), Joseph (Amy), and Patrick (Pam) Smith; 2 daughters, Margaret (Kurt) Thompson and Kathleen Head; 6 grandchildren, Jordan, Zackary, Amandamarie, Jessicaann, Jerry III, and Angel; great-grandson Alex; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jewel was involved in many organizations, notably the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, in which he served as Scout Master, Den Father and Order of the Arrow. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a long time member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a US Navy Veteran who served in the Korean War and later joined the Naval Reserves. He worked for GM, Blue Bird Baking Co./Teamsters and retired as a custodian from Walter E. Stebbins High School. Most importantly, Jewel was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and an all-around “gem” of a guy. Friends may visit on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME, Belmont Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 310 Allen St., at 10:30 AM, with prayers at the funeral home at 9:45 AM. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.
