Jim graduated from Beavercreek High School in 1960 and attended the University of Dayton and Sinclair Community College. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America for 72 years and received the first Eagle Scout Award for Troop 71 in 1960, after the troop was chartered in 1954. After working as an electronics technician for more than 40 years, he retired to focus on his passions for trains, baseball, amateur radio,and traveling with his wife Karen, of 58 years. Jim was a committed volunteer at EnterTRAINment Junction, West Chester Township, Ohio, where his handy work and engineering skills can be seen throughout the displays.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald A. and Imogene (Nicholas) Engel. He is survived by his wife, Karen (Mann) Engel; his siblings, Donna (and Turner) Osborne, Jerry (and Dale, deceased) Engel, Rhonda (and David) Boos, as well as his children and their wives, Michael (and Vicki) and Scott (and Annette);his three grandchildren, Jarett (and Karen), Brian and Michelle; his brother-in-law, Murray (and Barbi) Mann; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for James will be held Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Aley United Methodist Church, 4143 Kemp Road, Beavercreek, Ohio 45431. A Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately following the visitation and burial will follow at Aley Cemetery.
