This is the story of Ida Elizabeth “Betty” Scarbrough (Cook). Betty was a wonderful woman who was loved, cherished and will always be missed. Betty was an amazing wife, mom, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a great, great grandmother.
Betty’s story started on October 25th, 1925, in Harriman, TN, born the middle child to Chester and Bernice Scarbrough. Betty worked at the hosiery mill in her younger years, and later moved to Seattle, WA, where her parents ran a small restaurant. When Betty was in her late teens, her family moved to Dayton, OH, where she would finish high school and reside, making many lifelong friends. In 1942 she met Robert “Bob” E. Cook and they were married in 1943. On August 5th, 1945 their son William “Bill” R. Cook was born and then 6 years later on November 25th, 1951, they brought Becky A. Cook (Bowers) into the world.
Betty & Bob gained a great daughter-in-law, when Bill married Judy Longenecker (Cook) in 1968 and a wonderful son-in-law, Jack Bowers, when Becky was married in 1970. Betty and Bob spent almost 50 years together until his passing in 1992. Betty worked in the jewelry department for 23 years at Rike’s where she was employee of the month numerous times until retiring in the mid 1980’s. Betty loved to cook and take care of her family who truly meant the world to her!
Betty was blessed with 6 grandchildren; Shannon, Angie, Ryan, Ashley, Jack and Brandon. Betty had 4 great grandchildren as well; Amber, Brennan, Declan and Claire. She even went on to have 5 generations with her great-great grandson; Mac, an achievement many never see. Betty was also a wonderful aunt to her sister’s 3 children: Donna, George Ed and Thelma.
Everyone that knew Betty, was touched in some way. She was a sweet, caring soul and would drop whatever she was doing to help out a friend or a family member in need. Betty was very soft spoken, laughed and smiled all the time, always dressed to the nines, and was a huge blessing to everyone she met. Betty was raised in a wonderful Christian home, giving her life to the Lord as a child, and raised both of her children to always follow the Lord. Loved ones that went on before Betty included her beloved mother Bernice, her father Chester, her brother Chet and her sister Virginia.
To all of Betty’s family, she was the best Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Aunt and friend! She will truly be missed, but we know when she left this world, she was greeted in Heaven by her Mother, Father, Brother and Sister, who were eagerly waiting to see her once again. We will always love and cherish our memories of her, until we see her beautiful face once again.
