Gary was predeceased in life by his parents, brother Mike, and son Brian.
Gary leaves behind his wife, of 39 years, Donna, sons Joey (Mallery) and Derrick (Danette), daughter-in-law Jess, grandchildren Elsye, Weston, Zoey, and Brody, siblings Cheri Smith (Joe) and Craig Goeke (Tammy).
Gary’s work life was spent in sales, most of which as traveling sign salesman. He was always so proud of his ability to navigate any town in Southwest, Ohio from memory. Drive up any main street and you will still see his signs in the windows of local businesses. Gary also loved his sports. He was a great baseball coach and would never miss a practice or game and would take any opportunity to recount stories of Joey’s baseball games. When not coaching or cheering on his one of kids or grandkids he would be watching or listening to a Browns, Reds, or Buckeyes game.
Gary may be most well-known for his unmatched ability to make friends. Wherever he would go he could walk in and talk with anyone. His kind heart and immense friendliness is why he built so many long lasting, loving friendships. Friendships that span a lifetime. He loved to sit outside and tell stories of previous fishing and hunting trips, parties, softball games, and countless other adventures. He was truly blessed with many friendships.
Later in life Gary found a best friend in his dog Scarlet. They would spend every evening sitting out back playing fetch and watching the birds.
Family is what was most important to Gary. Countless nights you could find him “shooting the shit” and listening to music with his sister Cheri (who he just called Sister). He loved family gatherings and Holidays. Seeing everyone together was some of his happiest times. He could sit up for hours telling jokes, singing along with the "background music” or reminiscing about the past. He also never missed an opportunity to tell those he loved how much he loved and cherished them. He was fond of reminding his family to send him pictures so he could be part of their story. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and let everyone he crossed paths with know it.
A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at 4pm January 14th, 2023, at Wilmington VFW. This will be an opportunity to tell stories and drink a couple of beers in Gary’s honor. Care entrusted to Tobias Funeral Home, Far Hills. Please visit www.tobiasfuneralhome.com for more information.
