Gene Stirling was born in Ohio on September 29, 1929. His family moved to Torrance, California when he was 4. He was a star tackle in high school football for Torrance, and won All LA City Honors. A scholarship to USC was cut short when he was called up for service in the Korean War. After his military service, he enrolled at Long Beach State, under the G.I. Bill, and majored in Business Administration.
His career started in purchasing. He joined Oscar Mayer in Los Angeles in 1959 and changed to sales there. Promotions took him to the Detroit and Davenport offices from 1968-1972. He returned to LA in 1972 to become the Regional Sales Manager of the 11 Western States. It was the company and employees that he really enjoyed. He also helped develop their Wienermobile program. He retired in 1989.
His spare time was spent working on house projects--from electrical, plumbing, and designing their homes in San Clemente and San Diego. Neighbors called him St. Gene because he helped them with so many jobs. He loved living near the ocean, playing golf and still found time to serve on the Country Club and Home Owners' boards in San Diego.
His last move was to Bethany Village in Centerville. His optimistic attitude and great sense of humor made him many friends there that he really enjoyed. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley, daughter, Sandy, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His parents, siblings, Bob and Laura, and son Randy, preceded him in death.
Gene passed away suddenly on April 17, 2024 from cardiac arrest. He had a happy, successful life and marriage to Shirley. Memorial services will be at a later date. Contributions can be made to Graceworks Lutheran Services, 6430 Inner Mission Way, Dayton, Ohio, 45459, or a charity of your choice.
