Donald Eugene Smith

SMITH, Donald Eugene age 82 of Dayton, Ohio passed away October 25, 2012. He was a Stiver’s High School and University of Dayton graduate, served as a Lt. in the United States Army in Ft. Benning, Georgia and completed his service as a Captain in the Army Reserves. Don and his brother ran Smitty’s Hobby Shop for over 56 years. He was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church. Don and his wife enjoyed traveling around the world twice before starting a family. He enjoyed the company of many friends he met during his years at Smitty’s Hobby Shop, years of coaching boys and girls soccer in Centerville, and years of serving as an usher at St. George’s Episcopal Church. He truly enjoyed serving and just listening to the organist practice. He always had another piece he heard on the radio that he thought that the organist should play. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Ruth Smith and his wife, Jane C. Smith. Don is survived by sons, Steve Smith (Carol) and Matt Smith (fiancé, Emily Lane); a brother, Gene Smith (Dona); a sister, Beverly Scheckelhoff (Dick); granddaughters, Heather Erickson (Andy), Courtney Bailey, and Brenna Smith; great granddaughter, Adelaide Erickson; brother-in-law, James Constable (Michele); nieces, Barbara Constable, Christine Yates (Philip), Rebecca Bradam (Don), Debbie Miller (Jeff), and Kelly Bradley; great nieces, Elizabeth and Julianne Yates; and nephews, Greg Smith (Melissa), Bradley McClelland, and Patrick McClellan. The family will receive friends at the TOBIAS FUNERAL HOME-FAR HILLS CHAPEL, 5471 Far Hills Ave. at Rahn Rd, Tuesday, October 30, 2012 from 5 to 8 pm and Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 5520 Far Hills Ave. from 10 to 11 am followed by a funeral service at 11am. The Reverend Benjamin T.S. Phillips, officiating. Interment, David’s Cemetery.
