Hard to believe my running buddy is gone. RIP Al.

I did not receive a Christmas card from Allen this year so I checked and learn that he passed away.  I met Allen while running the Air Force marathon.  He was 69, I was 54.  We chatted for several miles and what I learned about him amazed me.  I told him that he was what I wanted to be when I grow up.  We stayed in touch ever since.  What a great man and soul.

Hard to believe that it has been  a year. RIP, Allen.

Allen was a great boss, engineer, mentor, and friend. I learned so much from him. I miss the opportunity to interact with him, exchange emails about his travels, and read his next book on some adventurous trip he had taken. Allen was truly a unique person and made a lasting legacy for himself.  

RIP Allen. I miss seeing you during our daily early morning run. 

Judy & family, please accept my heartfelt condolences. Many days I would encounter Allen while running . Today, I realized that I hadn't seen him for many months and now I know why, Both Gloria and Allen were friends of my family. Now he and Gloria are together.

Another mentor has moved on ahead, took me awhile to go find out why I hadn't heard from Allen over the holidays,,,,, his Christmas letters and his books, about his adventures with children were an inspiration.  He will be missed....Brian

First, my condolences to Allen’s family – what a wonderful man he was! I first met Allen in 1970 when I was transferred to WPAFB as a young officer, and there he became my supervisor and mentor. Working for Allen as part of his flight-test programs was, by far, the most exciting job I ever had. Thanks, Allen, for those unforgettable memories! However, what Allen left to me that was far more valuable was sharing his love of “adventure travel” with his grandkids. I attended one of Allen’s presentations at the Dayton Library in the 1990s when he talked about his newest book, “Canoeing the Wabash,” and I was immediately “hooked” on the concept. That very day I decided that, when I retired, I was going to start taking “adventure” trips with my own grandchildren and writing books about my travels with them. What a unique, rewarding, and memorable hobby this adventure traveling has turned out to be for me and my family. Thanks, Allen, for giving me your “gift” of family travel and enabling me to generate my own legacy of similar memories and books for my family.  Allen, you have greatly impacted my life in many ways.

I first met Allen in the 1970s when I was the UK participant in TTCP,  a military research collaboration programme  between the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
Allen chaired the Satellite Communications Panel. He ably led the work of the panel  over many years and his enthusiasm was infectious. His inspired leadership resulted in much good work being done and the panel achieving  wide recognition. He also became a personal friend.
I will  greatly miss his  regular Christmas newsletters  in which he recounted his  energetic exploits and activities with hid friends and family.

I and my wife Sandy are sad to hear of Allen's passing.  I first met Allen back in the 1970's as part of the international TTCP program. (The Technical Cooperation Program) between the U.S.A., Australia, U.K. and Canada.  Allen chaired and lead for many years the STP-6 panel on Satellite Communications.  His leadership was second to none and his success was well respected within the TTCP community.  In retirement, my wife and I looked forward to reading of Allen's adventures every Christmas in his letter.

I met Allen when he would come to swim at northwest center.  He gave me one of his books. He told me he would help me write a book if I ever wanted to. I did and Allen helped me write my autobiography.  I learned so much about him and his life. Allen was a great man. He was a great friend. 

I am happy to say that my daughter and I were blessed to have been a fellow traveler with Allen in Egypt in November.  You may  rest assured in knowing the love he had for all of you.  His eyes lit up when he spoke to us about the experiences with you!  All I could say was WOW!  We only knew him for a week and now our lives have been enriched by this fascinating man.  I am so sorry for your loss.  May you be comforted often in your memories of this gentle adventurous man.

The first time I met Allen, he told me all about his granddaughters and their travels.  He had such a life force… such a zest for life… I thought he might out live us all.  He was certainly a key figure in our support group.  I will miss you, dear friend.... the bike rides, dancing, skiing, etc... so many memories.  On to a new chapter reunited with your loved ones.  This world won’t be the same without you….. 

Allen was inspiring. I met Allen shortly after the death of both of our spouses. He was such an interesting person. His experiences of traveling all across the world just radiated from him. I miss our bike rides, but no one could keep up with his endurance. I will also miss his "take" on topics. He had such a down to earth logical approach to life. Finally, I will  miss him at our New Year's Day open houses. He was always the first in the door with a friendly smile, a handshake and the words "Happy New Year"!

I will miss my neighbor & good friend of over 45 yrs & his smile & cheery disposition. We bumped into each other in our alley (Allen lived 2 doors down) right before he left on his trip. As we finished our short conversation he looked at me & stepped closer & gave me a big bear hug & smile which I really appreciated. Allen was just that way❤️Little did I know that would be a good-bye hug. Just breaks my heart that I will never see him again. He was my go-to neighbor of sorts if I had a problem. Hugs Allen.

Allen and Gloria were my good friends They ( Allen)wrote the Knitting guild news letter while I was pres. We traveled to New Harmony Ind where Allen was our cook and bottle washer as Gloria taught. Allen and I had breakfast shortly before his leaving,he was so happy about returning to Egypt .

I first met Allen's daughter at my church.  Then Allen started coming there also.  My first thought was that he looked entirely too young to be her father!  I will never forget his kind and gentle demeaner and his hugs every Sunday morning.  When I was going through some tough medical issues he came and gave me a private talk and slide presentation of his Antarctic trip and one of his books.  What a treat that was.  I hated it when he had to leave.  That was special and I will never forget it.  I too thought he was invincible and it was a shock to hear of his passing.  He will be missed by many including me.  My deepest heartfelt sympathy to the family for their loss of this  fine and caring man.

I began working to support Allen at WPAFB in 1978 and flew all over the world with him for three years. He was one of the most competent engineers I ever met, so thorough and precise. He was also one of the best people I've ever worked with. And there has never been anyone more fit, which is why I thought he was invincible. He will be missed by all who knew him. My deepest condolences to his family.

A row of Allen’s travel books line up on my book shelves and remind me of the old song, “Far away places with strange sounding names  . . . .” He was kind and generous. He was interesting and thoughtful. I didn’t see him often, but I will miss him.

I met Allen through our support group, Move On, when my husband passed away 6 yrs. ago.  Allen was a wonderful man, there just wasn't much he couldn't do actively or mentally.  He had a wealth of knowledge, always ready to share.  He was a family man, and loved his family beyond words.  He was so active physically, there wasn't too much he couldn't do.  We thought he was Superman!  He loved to travel, and how fitting it was for him to pass doing the one thing he loved to do - travelling.  May his family find solace in that thought.

Allen was an incredible man.  I met him when I was in grief therapy for the death of my husband ten years ago.  Our therapy group ended up meeting on a regular basis and Allen was always willing to share his delightful world travels with us.  He was always so kind to me and I will never forget his adventurous spirit and his love for his family.

We miss our good friend.  He would come over every week, have lunch, and then watch nature documentaries with us.  We have had the privilege to be on several adventures with him.  We have heard him give many talks about his adventures.  And we know how proud he was of his family.  He was a very gentle, generous, and good natured man.

Allen was a role model for many people. He was courageous, inspiring, and lived life to the fullest. I am proud to be his granddaughter, and the love he gave to everyone around him is inspirational. This man accomplished so many things in his life time, that some of us could only dream of doing. Love you grandpa, you will forever live in the memories of so many blessed people. You are onto your next adventure, and one day we will meet again. Rest In Peace grandpa. 

Allen was an inspiration to all of us in the dance community. Lori and I particularly enjoyed his company, conversation, and his wonderful books about his life adventures.
