Shirley was born on August 23, 1940 in Spokane, WA to August and Helen Schmauder. When she was five years old, her mother passed during the birth of her brother Jerry. She was then raised by her grandparents Harry and Sophia Phillips. In 1961 she married Richard Gunning. She was known best for her cooking of baked goods like butterhorns , whoopie pies and cinnamon rolls, as well as her seamstress prowess sewing prom dresses, wedding dresses, float dresses, and alterations. Shirley loved to visit with family and friends, especially on the telephone. She was a member of the Davenport Presbyterian Church. Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Gunning, four sons: David (Gaylyn) Gunning, John (Tracy) Gunning, Daniel Gunning, and Jeff (Ashley) Gunning, nine grandchildren: Samuel, Seth, Luke, Jarod, Joey, Ashley, Evan, Renzley and Ridge in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Jerry Kagele and one grandson, Jackson Gunning. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Davenport Middle School Gym, Davenport, Wa. Memorials may be made to the Davenport Presbyterian Church or the Lincoln Hospital Foundation.
