She was born to Richard and Anna Straka on September 18th, 1929. After graduating high school in Stuart Nebraska, she spent a short amount of time in Chicago and then moved to South Dakota in a small town named Wagner. During this time, she worked at the Marty Mission where she met the love of her life, Mike McKenna. They got married in the Marty Mission church on July 11th, 1949. Due to her husband’s occupation as a welder, they traveled across the country to various dams until they made their home in Wilbur, Washington in 1971.
It is in Wilbur that Lorraine McKenna built her legacy. She was first hired as a waitress at Doxies Diner in 1974 and bought the establishment in 1981 with her daughter. From this day on Doxies would become her second home. Her kind and caregiving nature was felt by many as people throughout the community referred to her as “mom” or “grandma”. She inherited a strong work ethic from her family and did everything to make sure that the future generations would carry this trait forward. Over the course of her life not only did she work and raise children, but she found the time to volunteer with the Girl Scouts and was a member of the Catholic Church Altar Society.
Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Anna, as well as her husband Mike who passed away in April of 1989. She is survived by her brothers Bert Straka of Stuart and his wife Karen, Nebraska and Dick Straka and his wife MaryAnn of Onamia, Minnesota. She is survived by her two children in Wilbur: Marcy Best and her husband Terry Best; and Lyle McKenna and his wife Tammy McKenna. She leaves behind her six grandchildren Amie & Shawn, Tyler & Amanda, Laramie, Tiffany, Jennai and Josh: and her twelve great grandchildren Reanna, Coty, Jazlyn, Jayvin, Cole, Skyla, Rita Jo, Willow, River, Landon, Rhylee, and Aspen. She also leaves many other family members, dear friends and her sweet cat Squeakers who will miss her deeply.
Rosary will be held on Thursday December 1st, 2022, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wilbur, Washington at 6pm. Funeral mass will be held the following day at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday, December 2nd, 2022 at 10am with gravesite services following at the Wilbur Cemetery.
